It may have only been a fleeting appearance, but Owen Hargreaves' return to action for the final seconds of United's victory at Sunderland marked the completion of a long and frustrating journey for the midfielder.

After so long on the sidelines, Owen Hargreaves was elated to be back in action for United Reserves. MUTV's Mark Sullivan caught up with the United midfielder for an exclusive dressing-room chat at Moss Lane after his 45 minute cameo...

Owen, finally you got onto the pitch... how did it feel?
It was lovely to be back in a team environment. It's been about 16 months, I think, while I've been having surgery and individual rehab, so having team-mates around you, getting used to playing on a bigger pitch and having opponents was great. It's been a very long time and it was great to do that first step.the restCollapse )

Owen Hargreaves completed 45 minutes on his return to action for United Reserves against Burnley.

The 28-year-old, out of action since September 2008 after tendonitis surgery on both knees, put in a sharp shift against the Clarets at a rain-sodden Moss Lane.

Having attracted a flurry of camera flashes upon taking to the field, Hargreaves was involved straight from United's kick-off, and he set the tone for an understated yet effective display with the first in a string of accurate passes.

Deployed primarily as a holding midfielder on the right of centre-midfield, Owen frequently found himself in tight situations, but invariably emerged from them successfully - showing particularly impressive close control and quick turns on two occasions.

A string of long passes were rendered obsolete by Burnley's penchant for using their offside trap, but Hargreaves' range of passing with either foot, mobility and stamina were all evident.

He was replaced at half-time by Magnus Eikrem, with United leading 1-0 through Febian Brandy's 22nd-minute header.

Owen Hargreaves will not take part in the Reserves' Manchester derby on Thursday evening.

Last week it was reported that the midfielder would make his long-awaited return from injury when Manchester City travelled to Altrincham's Moss Lane on 11 March.

But the game, a top-of-the-table league clash, doesn't tally with Hargreaves' precise rehabilitation schedule.

A club spokesperson told ManUtd.com: "This definitely isn't another injury setback. It just doesn't fit in with Owen's training schedule."

But while Hargreaves, who hasn't played since September 2008, won't feature, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to name a strong team, despite the game coming just three days after the Reserves beat Stockport County 1-0 in the Manchester Senior Cup.

Thursday's game kicks off at Moss Lane, Altrincham, at 19:00. Entry is free for season ticket holders, £5 adults, £3 concs.

Those who can't make it to Altrincham can watch the match live on MUTV or read our match report on ManUtd.com shortly after the final whistle.

Owen Hargreaves is set to make his long-awaited comeback for Manchester United in a reserve team encounter next Thursday.

Hargreaves has been out since September 2008 with a series of knee problems.

The England midfielder had operations on both knees under the guidance of renowned specialist Dr Richard Steadman but after returning to United's Carrington training complex in September had been expected to be back within a couple of months.

Instead, a comeback has been repeatedly delayed, with suggestions in the last couple of weeks that Hargreaves was out for the season and had informed England coach Fabio Capello he would not be available for this summer's World Cup.

However, Ferguson revealed some optimistic news on Hargreaves ahead of the clash with Wolves, confirming an outing against Manchester City's second string at Altrincham's Moss Lane ground was now on the cards.

"Owen Hargreaves has shown for the first time that he is almost ready to play," said Ferguson. "He has been training with the first team, which has been good to see, and is pencilled in for a game with the reserves on Thursday."
